The Story Behind Cambridge NZ parkrun…

Brian Prescott, event director

I hadn’t even been to a parkrun when Rob Hammington and Lex Chalmers from Hamilton Lake were looking at setting up Cambridge parkrun.

They had put a few words out around the place. Someone mentioned me and then somehow I ended up as event director.

Rob and Lex set it up and I took it over and I’m still here. It took me six months before I got to run one. I’ve run 61 now.

We’ve quite a good rivalry with Cambridge parkrun in the UK. We’ve had a few visitors from Cambridge UK.

It took a year before anyone had run the double but there are quite a few now, but we’ve not had anyone go over there to run their one.

We were set up as an overspill to Hamilton Lake, they were well-established and thinking it could expand. Originally they looked at starting at the Gaslight Theatre end, which is where we turn around but there’s no toilets or cafe.

The Avantidrome gives us those facilities and some character. We’ve a brutal short hill at the end but it’s all psychological.

There aren’t many parkruns to have their name and country in the title, there are quite a few twins in Australia (same name as a parkrun or town in the UK), but we’re the only one in New Zealand.
